Presenter Spotlight: Francis Lewis (Handyman`)

Francis Lewis (known on phpBB.com as Handyman`) is a member of the MOD Team from Spokane, Washington, USA. He has been on the MOD Team since November 2007, and chiefly volunteers his time as a phpBB3 MOD validator.

Francis co-founded the Star Trek Guide forums in May 2006 using CVS snapshots of phpBB3 (KIDS: Don’t Try This At Home!), however, the site quickly shifted over to a community focused on phpBB3 discussion, support, and MODding, adopting the surname “phpBB Academy.” His work on Star Trek Guide during the 11-month beta cycle and nine-month RC cycle for phpBB3, and his work on some of the first phpBB3 MODs gave Francis a lot of experience with the phpBB3 codebase and was a major factor in his invitation to join the MOD team later on (along with the fact that his brother, David, and numerous members of the STG community had been lobbying for him to become a member of the MOD team).

At Londonvasion, Francis will give a 45 minute presentation on how to effectively build and manage a community, beginning at 15:15.

Presenter Spotlight: David Lewis (Highway of Life)

David Lewis (known on phpBB.com as Highway of Life) is a member of the MOD Team from Spokane, Washington, USA. He has been on the MOD Team since July 2007. Though he was originally brought on as a validator for phpBB3 MODs, he now spends somewhat more time working on the MOD Team’s various uber-secret projects.

David co-founded the Star Trek Guide forums in May 2006 using CVS snapshots of phpBB3 (KIDS: Don’t Try This At Home!), however, the site quickly shifted over to a community focused on phpBB3 discussion, support, and MODding, adopting the surname “phpBB Academy.” His work on Star Trek Guide during the 11-month beta cycle for phpBB3 and work on some of the first phpBB3 MODs gave David a lot of experience with the phpBB3 codebase and was a major factor in his invitation to join the MOD team later on. He shared more of his Star Trek Guide/phpBB3 experiences in an early interview on phpBB Weekly.

David has also played a significant role in covering phpBB on the web. He joined Douglas Bell (Fountain of Apples) as co-host of phpBB Weekly in June 2007, and took over the responsibilities of organizing the Official phpBB Podcast in November 2007. He is also contributing to Londonvasion Central, and helped arrange the schedule for Londonvasion.

At Londonvasion, David will give a 45 minute presentation on how you can design a website around phpBB3 and utilize phpBB3’s frameworks to make it possible, beginning at 14:30.

Presenter Spotlight: Paul Sohier

Paul Sohier, known on phpBB.com simply as Paul, is a member of the MOD Team who hails from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He originally joined the MOD Team in November 2006, first as a MOD validator, and then after a brief hiatus from the MOD Team in late 2007, he rejoined to chiefly work as a coder for the MOD Team’s various secret projects. He played a significant role in building the new MODs/Styles Databases after the new phpBB3-based phpBB.com was unveiled in early 2007. His phpBB MODs (for both phpBB2 and phpBB3) include such titles as AJAX Shoutbox, Profile Guestbook, and Extended Ban Manager, as well as some others which are no longer supported. He also has a fun personal website which is odd yet interesting at the same time. He has also appeared on a few episodes of phpBB Weekly and the Official phpBB Podcast.

On behalf of the MOD team, Paul will be presenting a half hour session on how to get involved with MODding and the process of MOD validation, starting at 14:00.

Presenter Spotlight: noth

noth, as he is known on phpBB.com, will be doing the one-and-only presentation not being done by a phpBB team member. After the phpBB teams collectively do a session on how to get involved and participate in phpBB after lunch, he will be doing a short 20-minute presentation on converting from phpBB2 to phpBB3, based on past experiences, and what some of Olympus’ benefits are.

We don’t know very much about noth beyond what’s listed in his profile. He is from North Surrey, which is located in British Colombia, Canada, if Google is to be trusted. His website is fa1kor.co.uk, which includes links to his eight different forums.

Presenter Spotlight: Yuriy Rusko (Marshalrusty)

Yuriy Rusko (Marshalrusty on phpBB.com) is a member of the Support Team (officially the Vice Support Team Leader) and the head coordinator of Londonvasion 2008. He has spent hours upon hours offering support in the phpBB2 (and later phpBB3) support forums since he registered on phpBB.com in November 2004. With over 24,000 posts to date, he currently has an average of over 18 posts per day, putting him sixth in terms of the number of posts on phpBB.com and third compared with the other Support Team members. He’s easily recognizable on the forums with his iconic “DON’T PANIC!” avatar.

Yuriy, who hails from New York City, is the administrator of phpBBhelp.org, the Unofficial Forum for phpBB Supporters, which was quite active prior to Yuriy joining the teams, and has been somewhat less active since. After two years of dedicated posting in the support forum, Yuriy joined the Support Team in November 2006 where he has continued his hard work. He has also appeared on few episodes of the Official phpBB Podcast and was interviewed in September 2007 on an episode of phpBB Weekly.

Yuriy will be opening Londonvasion at 9:00 and leading introductions, and will also be doing an 11:30 presentation on spam, how to prevent it, and how phpBB3 handles it.

Presenter Spotlight: Henry Sudhof (Kellanved)

Henry Sudhof (Kellanved on phpBB.com) is yet another member of the Development Team who hails from Berlin, Germany. He joined the Development Team in April 2007, before which he was a member of the MOD Team for a year or so. In addition to frequently fixing phpBB bugs, he is a well-versed security expert, and did quite a bit to help phpBB3 be secure enough to get high marks from one of the world’s most-respected security firm during phpBB3’s late-2007 security audit. He is also the author of “Exploits from the Crypt”, an installment on the new phpBB Blog discussing phpBB’s security reputation. It’s only fitting that his presentation at Londonvasion will be on Security and Security Concepts in phpBB 3.0 and 3.2, which will take place around 10:45-11:30 at Londonvasion.

Presenter Spotlight: Nils Adermann (naderman)

Nils Adermann (naderman on phpBB.com), who hails from Karlsruhe, Germany, is another member of phpBB’s Development Team. Prior to becoming a developer, he wrote a number of phpBB MODs, and in 2005 he worked on one of the Community Coding Projects alongside DavidMJ. Based on their high-quality work on their project, Nils and David were both invited to join the Development Team in December 2005, and they really helped the team to pick up the pace on phpBB3 development, having the first beta ready to go in June.

Nils has dedicated a lot of work to the UTF-8 support in phpBB3 as well as numerous other regular expressions, along with other tasks and other bugs. He also has worked a bit with the project of integrating phpBB3 with Joomla! and other systems, as he discussed in a recent phpBB Weekly episode. His website is naderman.de.

Presenter Spotlight: Meik Sievertsen (Acyd Burn)

With just about eight days left until Londonvasion begins, we’ll be counting down to the big day with a daily look at who will be presenting at Londonvasion in a daily feature called the Presenter Spotlight. This will be a chance for you to get to learn just a little bit about each of the presenters at Londonvasion, and we start out today with a look at the first presenter (other than the introduction): Meik Sievertsen, known as Acyd Burn on phpBB.com.

Meik Sievertsen is currently the Development Team Leader for phpBB, and as such, plays a major role in determining the direction of phpBB development. He wrote a very significant amount of the code behind phpBB3 during its very long stages of development and can often be seen in CVS/Subversion checkins fixing numerous bugs at once, or else creating numerous bugs at once as a result of submitting early code for new phpBB features.

Meik, who hails from Oldenburg, Germany, has been a phpBB developer for many years, and interestingly enough, is the only member of the phpBB’s current Development Team who has been a developer since before 2005. He was also the author of the Attachment MOD for phpBB2, one of the most popular phpBB2 MODs if not the most popular phpBB2 MOD. He was promoted to the role of Development Team Leader at the same time as the late 2004/early 2005 promotion of Paul Owen (psoTFX) to the role of co-Project Manager (a position that no longer exists and is now handled collectively by all of the team leaders). His hard work and leadership have helped pull the Development Team through lull periods and other tough times to produce an amazing final release of phpBB3, as well as new up-and-coming projects such as 3.2 Ascraeus and integration with Joomla! and other platforms.

Meik will be doing two presentations at Londonvasion at 9:20-10:00, discussing the history and the future of the phpBB project and representing the Development Team in delivering an inside look in the status of phpBB 3.2 (”Ascraeus”) development.
